Lone Worker Laws
Lone workers are among the most vulnerable members of our workforce. From showing vacant units to late night security personnel, multifamily employees often carry out tasks in isolation, away from direct supervision or immediate assistance.
In attempts to protect these workers, several states have passed laws designed to specifically protect lone workers. California’s OSHA law, for example, mandates by law that employers ensure “effective communication by voice, observation or electronics means is maintained so that employees at the worksite can contact a supervisor when necessary.” It adds that “if an electronic device will not furnish reliable communication in the work area, the employer will ensure a means of summoning emergency medical services.”
If you own or operate any properties in California (or the other states with lone worker or hotel worker laws), in order to be compliant with these stipulations, any employee working alone must have a communication device that can reach supervisors and/or emergency medical services AT ALL TIMES.
