Proven Strategies for Onsite Safety

It is an unfortunate fact that multifamily properties struggle with high rates of crime onsite. In some cities, over 25% of ALL CRIME that occurs in the city happens onsite at an apartment complex. And crime onsite continues to worsen; in fact, over 80% of property managers surveyed said that crime in 2024 had gone up or gone up significantly compared to 2023.

So what can you do to stay safe while working onsite at a multifamily property? Check out our tips below for proven strategies to help you stay safe.

  1. Display an alarm or security device: studies have found that 60% of perpetrators will not commit a crime if they identify an alarm. Apartment Guardian’s fully mobile alarm can be carried anywhere onsite, and you can display that your property is protected by Apartment Guardian in the office window using one of our provided stickers.

  2. Make sure others know where you are. Working in multifamily often means providing tours or walking the property alone, but that doesn’t mean your co-workers can’t know where you are. Tell co-workers where you are going and bring your Apartment Guardian device anywhere you go. If you need to use it, the device will automatically send your location to emergency services as well as any other onsite co-workers.

  3. Speak up: it is estimated that 60%-70% of violent crime is committed by those with a history of offenses. If someone is making you uncomfortable onsite or causing problems, make sure you address it with your superiors and that they take your safety concerns seriously. There is a lot management can do to make their employees feel safe, such as providing a mobile safety alarm for when out on onsite or better security features at the front office, such as buzz open only doors.

While it is true that multifamily properties can be home to an alarming level of crime, no one should feel unsafe at work. Using our safety tips above can help keep you and your co-workers safe.
